The Benefits of Pictionary
One of the great things about kids is that they learn through play! It is actually the best way to teach children new things, especially for our younger learners.
Pictionary is no exception! This fun and engaging game provides children with so many amazing benefits to help them learn and develop.
Here are some of the major benefits of Pictionary:
- Helps make connections between words and meanings
- Enhances vocabulary
- Promotes fine motor development with drawing
- Boosts creativity and imagination
- Builds teamwork and collaboration skills
How to Play Pictionary
The game is very simple to play. All you need are whiteboards, markers, and a list of Pictionary words. If you do not have a whiteboard then pieces of paper will work just fine.
Here are the steps:
- Write down the Pictionary words/ideas onto little slips of paper and place them in a hat.
- Divide the players into 2 teams (at least 4 players are needed to play).
- Designate one player from each team to be the illustrator. The rest will be guessing.
- Have each illustrator select a piece of paper from the hat.
- For younger children I allow them to redraw from the hat if they don’t know the meaning of the first word
- The illustrators have 3 minutes to draw out the word they selected.
- The children on each team will guess what their illustrator is drawing.
- If children guess correctly, they get a point
- If children are unable to guess, no point is given
- The first team to get to 5 points wins the game
- A different child should be designated as illustrator for each round
One major rule in Pictionary:
- Children are not allowed to use any form of verbal communication! They can not say or write the word. The word must be represented through a picture/drawing
